La prononciation standard de l'anglais parlé en Grande-Bretagne est appelée « Received Pronunciation » ou « RP ». Cette prononciation est dans l'ensemble celle des milieux cultivés et de la presse audiovisuelle, même si, sur ce plan, les accents régionaux sont aujourd'hui mieux représentés qu'autrefois. L'expression « Standard English » désigne la langue telle qu'elle est enseignée dans les écoles.

L'anglais américain se distingue de l'anglais britannique surtout par sa prononciation mais aussi par des différences orthographiques et sémantiques. Le « Network Standard » désigne l'anglais américain standard, utilisé en particulier dans les médias.
